The word iron comes from the Anglo- Saxton language. The chemical symbol of iron is Fe, which comes from the Latin word ferrum. Iron is the metal which modern civilization is built. Iron is used in tools, washing machines, and cars. Pure iron is a shiny silver- colored metal. Pure iron rusts very quickly when exposed to air and moisture. Iron if combined with other substances can make an alloy called steel. Iron’s properties are transition metal; silver color; solid at room temperature. It was discovered by what was known by ancient civilization. The atomic number is 26. Atomic weight is 55.845. The number of protons and electrons is 2,795 degrees F and boiling point is 4,982 degrees F. Iron is commonly found on earth’s crust as iron is in the metal group. Its atomic number is 65. Iron is rarely found in its true pure state in nature. That’s because chemically, iron is a fairly reactive metal. Which means it combines with other elements very easily. When exposed to another element such as oxygen iron atoms easily lose two or three electrons. When it loses two or thee electrons it turns color and it loses its shiny appearance. The colors it usally turns when it loses those electrons are either black, green, yellowish, orange, or bright red color. Iron is believed to be the most common element in the universe. In gas form its founding the sun and in many other stars. Earth’s core is mainly made of iron. Iron is the fourth most common element and the second most abundant metal in Earth’s crust. Iron makes up about five percent of Earth’s crust, but hardly any of it is in its pure form. The only pure iron can be found on earth’s surface would be from meteorites. But, a lot of iron can be found combined with other elements. There are many types of iron. All of these can be grouped into three types; cast iron, wrought iron, and pig iron. Iron is also found in your blood. It is a part of hemoglobin, which is in your red blood cells. Hemoglobin is responsible for carrying oxygen from your lungs to all parts of your body. There is four iron atoms in each hemoglobin molecule. Iron helps attract oxygen molecules. iron and the group VIIB elements are more generally classified as transition metals.
